Tesla’s trillion dollar valuation is fast approaching

2nd hand EVs :slight_smile: Battery is NOT good. And if it costs a fortune to change battery, double NOT good. More prudent to either buy a new EV or an ICE car (old or used).

SF Craigslist has several newer used Model 3s for around $40k. People are dumping theses cars after a few months. Quality is the issue

Ok, correction. Don’t buy first batch of used Model 3 :slight_smile: because of quality issue.

Don’t buy a new one either. Only one person on this forum that I know bought one and complained about the quality. Bolt owners at least know they have no resale value. Musk doesn’t care about quality. Just wants to pump the stock price.

“Another good example is the long-term durability evaluation of a car. When I discussed it with Elon, I told him our engineers’ calculations led to at least a million equivalent miles of driving required before launching the car — a six-month phase required to discover potential weaknesses and fix them. My request was actually very limited in regards to the industry practices: German manufacturers don’t release a car that has not clocked 10 million kilometers and two winters. Elon, in his customary laconic way, answered: “OK, do it. But we are not delaying the launch date for it… — But we might encounter issues that will require some modifications of the production models… — Yeah, I know, but we will make the changes afterward if we have to… — Even if it involves recalling some cars? — Yes. And for the rest, we will adjust by pushing some OTA upgrades (Tesla’s main software is maintained and upgraded remotely on a regular basis, just like a PC).”

Elon is essentially using the current software engineering approach to launching software applications. Launch a beta apps version 0.8 and add features/ fix bugs in later versions. Long gone is the era of launching a fully tested Version 1.0 quality.

Your phone breaks it’s a pain in the ass. Your car breaks you can die

Do not buy used EV. Second, do not buy new EV, just lease them for 3 years. When EVs are coming 500 miles/charge, buy them as you need to keep the EV for more than 8 years to get better benefit.

How are the asking prices different from depreciated values of any gas car of similar price points?

There is a shortage of used cars. ICE vehicles are actually selling at a premium. Supply chain issues have driven up prices of new ICE cars. Especially Corvettes and pickups. Dealers are marking up the Corvette 2020 price from $63k-$87k. My buddy had to go to Arizona to get a new $60k pickup. EV Teslas at $40k are being dumped.

I’m not sure I’d call 40k dumped. A brand new standard range plus M3 without the vaporwear FSD is $38k. Personally, I’d much rather have a brand new car with a bit less range than a 2–3 year old car that can go a few more miles/charge. When you can get a clean title M3 for 15k I will call it dumped. You can get brand new Leafs and Bolts with 30–40k MSRP for ~15k. Those are getting dumped.

Two years ago Tesla 3s were on Craigslist for $60k. People were reselling making money. Now they loose money with the cost of sales taxes and delivery fees. EVs are already running into saturation at 1% of the market. The world doesn’t want a bunch of cars that take hours to charge and can’t carry anything. Commuter second or third cars at best. Imagine 10 cars backed up at a charging station with 45 min charge times. UsedBolts and Leafs are worthless.

  1. So is that the current angle? Renewables won’t succeed because batteries are too toxic? Hard to keep track because the goalposts constantly move.

  2. Saying Model 3’s resale for $40k far from a critique of their residual value or buyer happiness. Many would argue that’s a positive relative to competitors’ resale values.

New Bolts for less than $20k. Basically free. Still nobody wants them. Unless Biden bans ICE. Government needs to come up with better cars not punitive laws. 10 year old pickups are selling for $30k

Did you check out the new prices of the specific models from the Craigslist screenshot that you posted?

Posting them below for your reference.

Standard Range Plus => $37,990
Long Range => $46,990
Performance => $54,990

Bolt and Leaf are too small for American roads. It has nothing to do with the drivetrain (although AWD would be a plus). A car that small is a deathtrap when everyone else is driving a lifted F-150, Tahoe or X5. The next step in EV domination will be (real) SUVs and pickups that weigh 5000 lbs+ with 300+ mile range. Think Rivian, Lordstown Motors, GM Hummer and Tesla CT.

Bolt isn’t small ( except in size ), but that power is too good. I drove 3 years with it, able to speed nicely when someone trying rear-end. But,The power is less than Tesla.

I drive bolt from San Jose to Los Angela’s with single charge ( 45 mins ) in between, no issue.

EV revolution started and will end ice cars in 10 years.

why not buy used ICE for 3 yrs and switch to EV? I am currently looking to buy a car

What if I come up with an EV that don’t need charging stations to be built?

It all depends on how many miles you are going to use. Unless you drive minimum 12000 miles/year, it is not worth leasing EV car, better to go used ICE cars at very low price.

I have one old Honda odyssey (grounded with Battery Tender at garage) and using my EV Bolt (even to go Los Angeles and come back) as I am left with 20000 miles (out of 45k) in next 7 months.
