Um they discounted the car in the last month with temporary discounts.
Why would you compare to different types and classes of cars?
Would you prefer a BMW SUV over a Tesla? Those are the target consumers.
Oh and Tesla dominance in California shows lots of people moving from Prius to Teslas.
Thought there was more reduction. If the temporary discounts last month are the same as today, why the sudden rush today? Discount is a discount – temporary or permanent.
What do think of this deal? Low mileage hood mpg
The BMW X5 was redesigned in 2019, so the 2018 that you referenced is an older design and also Diesel(not saying it’s bad just that it’s not the latest). BMW X5 according to CR is in the Luxury mid-sized SUV category. Btw, I’m sure you might already know it, German cars have higher maintenance costs and coming from a Toyota it will feel uncomfortable(I find it uncomfortable now that my 1st 5 years are gone).
I can’t really speak for you, because every person’s needs are different. For e.g. a colleague I had just needed a car to go from pt A to B, and I look for something different. Also, I’m not an SUV fan, except a Porsche Cayenne that I drove that a friend owns, but that was in a different price category for me at that time when I was really young @15 years ago.
However, some general tips on car shopping in my view
- Figure out what is important for you in a vehicle(whether that’s higher height for snow, space, noise, ride, speed, handling, mpg ,reliability or a combination of these).
- Test drive your cars. I test drove my Audi Quattro by renting it for a day from a rental car company. I also test drove my Tesla 2-3 times(at that time I could test drive a Tesla, don’t know now).
- Check out consumer reports for car reviews(It’s just @$35/year and you can cancel it later and compared to the price of the car that $35/year its less than peanuts BUT it provides great value). Check out the reviews very carefully and check out what they say and look through the ratings. - Reason, you won’t really be able to spend too much time(more than 30 minutes) when you test drive for a $40-50K+10%CA sales tax purchase. I made a mistake with an Acura and I sold it at @40% loss in 3 years, big chunk of change lost. CR has cars and SUVs categorized by size, year for the same model and changes with new models and various categories.
- Make sure your significant other also likes the car.
Good luck and yes, ask me any questions if you have any.
Went through a German car reviewer and according to him Tesla supercharger network in Germany is much superior than other ev chargers.
Fuel injector issues, carbon build up, EGR issues…I’d be careful of BMW diesels if you plan to keep it medium/long term.
Germany BEV market shares for the top 8 auto groups. VW has about 25% market share, Tesla about 15%.
This is Europe as a whole. About the same number. VW has 25% and Tesla 15%. The 2023 number is a bit misleading as it’s only been a week.
This is quarterly number. You can see clearly Geely (Volvo + Polestar) making rapid gain in recent months.
The point is, Tesla has not been a leader in BEV in Europe for quite a while. Its share has been pretty anemic at 15%. It may need to cut its prices in Europe if it wants to grow its share. Competition is heating up big time over there.

She’s a crook. Even Madoff didn’t lose his investors so much money.
For TSLA, This is a race to the bottom. TSLA is done. Competing on price and with US manufacturing is fools gold. RIP.
I suspect TSLA can drop to 25-30 within this year.
Thanks. German cars used to prestigious and reliable. They definitely aren’t reliable anymore. I used to own a lot of older high maintenance cars. My Bay Area mechanic was one of my best friends. I think I need to find a really good Tahoe mechanic if I buy the X5. I am leaning towards the 2023 Prius PHEV AWD(not available yet) and keep my Highlander and use the 4 Runner as a farm truck.
My friend bought 2018 X5 and it had an issue of automatically shifting gear to neutral/ parking while driving in highways. This might be an outlier but just for your info.
Plug-in hybrids will be a great option for a bunch of people. We are going to need both.
Only drawback of plug-in hybrids are the complex power train. I would be worried about longetivity but Toyota helps mitigate that.
The new AWD plug-in Prius looks fantastic. Completely versatile, reliable and efficient.
“It may be a normal business practice but this is not how a responsible enterprise should behave,” said one Tesla owner protesting at the company’s delivery centre in Shanghai’s Minhang suburb on Saturday who gave his surname as Zhang.
He and the other Tesla owners, who said they had taken delivery in the final months of 2022, said they were frustrated with the abruptness of Friday’s price cut and Tesla’s lack of an explanation to recent buyers.
Prius are used as taxis. Probably one of the most reliable cars ever. I had one but that was before AWD PHEVs were available.
I enjoyed it. Felt like a midsize car inside . Almost as much room as my 4 runner. It was slow and not great for handling. But that was 10 years ago. They are definitely more peppy now. 0-60 7 seconds that’s better than my 1980 RX7 was 40 years ago
Price cut in Australia.
