Tesla’s trillion dollar valuation is fast approaching

“We dug our own grave with the Cybertruck,” Musk said.

It’s “one of those special products that comes along only once in a long while. And special products that come along once in a long while are just incredibly difficult to bring to market to reach volume, to be prosperous,” he added.

Doesn’t he know that sounds like a total idiot?
The Edsel was a special project also

.

Elon is good at if can’t convince, confuse. Cultists would agree with any idiotic reasoning he put up. Manufacturing new products have always started off with low yields. Also new product development has always been difficult. Is a well documented and known fact with those familiar with marketing and manufacturing.

The truck has been hyped for over 5 years and even he admits it’s a mistake… but he is still hyping it.

So much for the cost savings, reliability and longevity of EV’s in general.

My friend just bought a new Ford Lightning for $72,000, tax included In Nevada… they were $100k last year. Prices are dropping for EVs because nobody wants them even with high gas prices.

Much better choice than a Tesla for most people
You can buy a new one in Sacramento for $59k

Thinking aloud: Lifecycle cost of EV is higher than ICE car.
Caveat: No DD.

Social media is a great place to be. You read about cultists’ and anti-cultists’ views. Below is an anti-cultist’s view… provided for entertainment and a good laugh for the weekend.

Ford Lightening is cheap because it chews. Likely so will the Cybertruck. Lightening needs so many electrons to haul that you can only haul from one side of town to the other. Thinking of hauling your trailer up to the mountains with it? By the time you get there you’ll have spent two or three days sleeping in that trailer while the car charges. Without hauling you just have a very heavy and inefficient EV.

Lightning is not for truck owners that actually haul anything. They are just a status symbol.

Amit talking to a cultist.

Conceptually, I agree with him. Not sure about his estimate of timeframe for milestones. Also, some of his examples are :-1: For example, about bots, those tasks he mentioned are already here. The way he invested in TSLA is similar to a blogger I know in investing in AAPL… complete faith, not a single drop of doubt.

Something fishy going on there….

Tesla’s Q3 10Q includes this paragraph:

Love my Lightning. By far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned…spacious, quiet and very quick. No maintenance and cheap electricity so costs about the same to run as a tin can Prius. Haul stuff all the time for both fun and work but don’t tow. May or may not try using it as our primary ski vehicle this winter. 80 or 50 would be a piece of cake but there is limited fast charging on 88.

How many miles do you have?

How’d it compare with Rivian R1T?

The internet is telling me that the Lightening has an energy cost of 0.21 per mile. At 50 mpg and $4 a gallon gas a Prius has a cost of 0.08 per mile.

16k miles so far. More spacious inside and quieter ride than R1T. Feels like a real truck that you can do truck things with without damaging. R1T feels like a pretend truck/toy.

$0.28/kW divided by 2.4 miles/kW is 11.6 cents per mile. We have solar so electricity is even cheaper.

California gas averages $5.42/gallon divided by 50 mpk is 10.8 cents per mile for a prius. Add 2.7 cents/mile for oil changes every 7.5 k and you are at 13.5 cents per mile for the prius vs 11.6 for the lightning.

So it may make sense if you’re in a state where you’re getting hosed down for gas.
Also, oil changes on a Prius where I live would come to less than 2 cents per/mile. And are you accounting for depreciation on your solar system? Not just the panels but the inverters, etc.

The Prius can run for nearly 300,000 miles before it’s hybrid battery needs replacement. I doubt you’ll get that from the batteries in your Lightening. And with EV’s that’s most of the value of the car.
Of course you can’t really tow or haul in a Prius but you can’t do that for any great distance in a Lightening either and the Prius is far safer and more maneuverable. Just look at the cost of insuring one versus the other. The Lightening might offer more protection but it does far more damage to the other car and passengers while protecting you from many accidents you could have avoided entirely in a car that handles better and weights 3000 pounds less. This is of course true for all trucks regardless of whether they’re ICE or EV.
And I’ve seen Prius’s parked at trailheads here in AZ that are at the end of truly terrible Forest Service roads. The driver just had to take it easy. So no, they have their limitations but are definitely not tin boxes.
