The Modern Era But Child Marriage Still Allowed? WTH?

Unbelievable!:scream:

No moral values in this country anymore? :face_vomiting:

I suspect this is mostly a religious thing. From what I can tell a number of protestant denominations strongly believe that if you get pregnant, you need to get married. I can’t tell if it’s essentially supposed to undo the sin of sex outside of marriage, or the penalty for it or simply the long-held belief that if you get a girl pregnant, the right thing is to marry marry her. There’s certainly validity in asking the father to be a part of the child’s life both as a dad and as a provider, but marriage isn’t required for that. Perhaps there’s a fear that without it, the dad will run off, but eventually the majority of such couples divorce anyways. I think though, that’s accepted as “well they tried”. If the denomination doesn’t view divorce and remarriage as wrong–and most protestant denominations–even evangelicals–don’t, there’s no incentive not to.

From a Catholic point of view this idea is makes no sense because the Catholic church views divorce and remarriage as wrong. To enter into marriage just because you got pregnant both fails to undo or atone for the sin of sex outside of marriage and fails to properly predispose you to marriage as you are supposed to enter into a marriage completely voluntarily which such a situation isn’t. But probably not a large Catholic influence in Idaho.

By all means get married religiously but don’t have to be legally married. By legally married, you get to gain the benefits of the law which put taxpayers holding the bag. IMHO, marriage laws should be refined to be extremely clear about in what circumstances do two people can marry legally e.g. can’t marry legally if there is no chance of a kid within 5 years. And whether marriage without a kid in say, 5 years, should be considered null and void.

So in those cases where they get married before the age of 16 they still need both parental and judicial consent. What’s the problem?

The fanatic and religious people, think of Christ saying “let the children come to me”
so I can have sex with them because their immature brains can’t help them to realize they need to grow up more in order to understand morality.

My point here is the bunch of hypocrite people riding the bandwagon of “moral values”.

There are many cases where the bride is 13-15-16, the husband to be a 50-60 years old. :face_vomiting:

And, they come to America to do that. All to exploit parents in need of money or brainwashed by religious dogma.

And we know there are paradises for sexual predators to go and
enjoy themselves with the companionship of minors, be male or female.:scream:

And, I know this sexual deviation is “cultural”, including the servitude of many immigrant women being caught working in massage parlors, mostly from Asian countries. You can read this in the media lately. But, I know since I came to this country that exotic dancers, aka “pole dancing” women come from Europe and else.

Women then, have been not only sent to the “kitchen” but to work the sex industry, better if they are entering the puberty stage. That’s when they are sought by these “criminal, sexual predator minded people”.

Disgraceful. :disappointed_relieved:

Really the problem is inability to consent. At 16, a kid doesn’t really understand the seriousness of marriage. Not even sure 18 is that age, but hey. Also, they’re likely to drop out of high school, probably more often than if they’re just pregnant and unmarried and their mom takes care of the kid. If they’re single, they view supporting themselves as their problem. If they’re married, it’s their husband’s problem–until 5 years and 2-3 kids later they walk out. Then the woman doesn’t even have a high school diploma.

But otherwise, I’d totally agree that if judges have any brains, they’d say “no” to the marriage. Unfortunately, I went down the rabbit hole last night, and came across situations where judges approved marriages that clearly they shouldn’t have.

The non-US cultural issue of widely accepted child marriages is definitely a problem, but it moreso in places like Florida than Idaho. Apparently its a serious problem in the Guatamalan community in America.

But we should keep in mind that CA and Idaho are also culturally very different. Teenage marriage may not be viewed there the way its viewed here if people aren’t expecting to need a college degree to work.

I’m not sure this is actually possible, hanera. I know some elderly couples who “date” and are essentially married but don’t get officially married because they don’t want to lose the benefits they get from their deceased spouse. If they could get religiously, but not civilly married, I’m pretty sure a number of them would.

Idaho is a third world country.

There are entire cities, communities where child marriage is a sanctimonious thing. They live with third world ideas.

As I said, it is a “religious-conservative” approach that makes this marriage a thing of the past. And a very dirty, sinister look at sexuality.

Idaho is like the good old days when men were men and sheep were nervous.

Here is the modern world.

Luigi had just finished reading a new book entitled, You Can Be THE MAN of Your House. He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced, “From now on, you need to know that I am THE MAN of this house and my word is Law.
You’ll prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m finished eating my meal, you’ll serve me a sumptuous dessert. After dinner, we’re going upstairs and we’ll have the kind of sex that I want. Afterwards you’re going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You’ll wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe then, you’ll massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?” His Sicilian wife Maria replied, “the fucking funeral director would be my first guess.”

A retired cop I know just gave up a chunk of his CA pension to move to Idaho. Loving it there.

Sun Valley is paradise. But mere millionaires feel poor there.

So, we take it that this child marriage is cultural?

Poor kids newborns, being promised to yet another newborn? And they are barely entering the puberty stage.

Jesus!

Centuries ago, women married once puberty right?

Absolutely. Question is when that was. Almost certainly by 16.

Puberty nowadays is probably around 11-13 due to better nutrition but also possibly hormone disruptors in the environment/food/water.

Yeah!
And also, most women and men wouldn’t live longer than 40

We all know that most laws are taken from customary interpretation of what is wrong or good. And most if not all come from religious leaders dictating whatever.

So, I forgot if Salomon, one of those high thinkers told a mother, who was disputing the custody of a child, that if she loved him, to cut the kid in half. Once she grabbed the machete, sword or knife to do it, he understood she loved the kid and gave him to her.

An eye for an eye.

And, stoning a spouse cheater, usually a woman, but nowadays? Please, don’t let me go there.

That’s actually irrelevant. Whether they lived to be 40 or 80, when they hit puberty they generally got married and created a family. What’s changed is that we expect school until you’re 18 years old and we now expect women to work in an environment where you can’t bring your kids to work. It’s entirely changed the dynamic of motherhood.

Well SOMEBODY better have kids. The date at which the human race falls below replacement level has been pushed up to 2049 (see reviews of “Empty Planet” by Canadian authors).
Think what THAT will do to real estate prices

I will be 96 in 2049. Not too worried about population decline. More concerned about over population.

Invest in places where population is growing higher than replacement rate. Africa? Middle East?
Frankly, I think we would just reach an equilibrium, say stable at $8B, an auspicious number. Ignore those scare mongers.
