How can you trust a party that for 7 years bitched about a healthcare bill but didn’t have a clue of what they would get into when it came to kill it and replace it?
They had a chance to redeem themselves by grabbing Obamacare, and from that skeleton pull the good and add their implementations. But no! They were so stupid, so complacent, so dumb to think that for being the majority in anything they would get a pass by not only the legislators but the voters. They knew the people, “we the people” didn’t like their plan and that was visible during their own town hall meetings where they had to leave in a hurry because they couldn’t answer with the truth.
The reality is that “we the people” spoke and told them to pack up and leave.
Now, Thwitler is crying foul, it’s the democrats fault he says. Same as not knowing anything about Obamacare, he doesn’t know that he owns that baby and he has to feed it or let it die, and with it, many of his voters.
Healthcare is very hard, too many lobby force and too much money at stake. It may take years to find a good solution that can be acceptable to all parties
Look at the whole world, what are viable solutions other than single payer? It’s so suspicious that not a lot of research is done on healthcare policy while it consumes 18% of GDP. We should have more healthcare policy research than climate change.
Healthcare is complicated, not only in political sense. It’s also complicated in terms of economic, business, tax, mass psychology, mass behavioral pattern, social and many many aspects. Is this a taboo for academic research? We just leave 19% of GDP to a few politicians? Everyone knows that politicians are not the smartest nor the most honest Angels
With all these pressures, ACA was introduced/reformed after 30 years.
Even at that time, this was the case:
“Then there’s the problem of rising cost. We spend one and a half times more per person on health care than any other country, but we aren’t any healthier for it. This is one of the reasons that insurance premiums have gone up three times faster than wages. It’s why so many employers – especially small businesses – are forcing their employees to pay more for insurance, or are dropping their coverage entirely.”
The main benefit is no one can deny pre-existing condition, but they need to cover !
I have long said Trump’s allegedly negotiating skill is a load of hot BS. To negotiate well means you know the minute details: what to give and what to take. Otherwise you are just reduced to crude bullying. And that’s exactly what Trump did, and failed miserably:
The atmosphere was friendly, and the president had the group laughing with irrelevant riffs and stories of negotiations past, but it became clear, as soon as he made the “little shit” comment, that no serious changes were going to be made, because the president didn’t have sufficient command of the policy details to negotiate what would or would not be realistic for Ryan to shepherd through the House.
The House has voted more than 60 times to repeal Obamacare when Obama was president. They could count on Obama to stop their own nonsense, and they could vote with no consequence. But now that their votes actually mean something they collapsed under their own contradictions.
I think they will try again, and again. The absurdity of voting 0 times under Trump to repeal is so great even they can’t sweep it under the rug. And they will fail, again and again. Great show ahead.
But, it is all good for the people, half baked Trump-care will be worse.
For both Trump as well as Obama, the problem area is congress ! Trump can not do many thing he assured without congress !!
For Mexican Bridge, US people pay (not mexico)
All 7/6 country ban is a failure, not even necessary !
ACA removal/change - nightmare work - non functioning ! IMO, they can not change except dropping 3.88% tax for wealthy 1% and removing mandatory health insurance.
Let us see how the tax reduction - hopefully congress may agree as they personally benefit, but funding the gap without printing money is a challenge issue !!
At the end of four years, I am certain Trump’s so called achievements will be less than Obama’s achievement !
The Republican Entertainment Complex demonized Obamacare eight years ago when it was introduced. Based upon Republican think tank ideas from the 1990s, Obamacare does it best to square a circle–provide more access to health care, slow the growth of costs, keep providers happy, and keep an insurance based financing system. It does all of those things a bit, but none of them particularly well.
We could learn from other industrialized countries of the world and adopt a single payer system–Medicare for All being the dominant model of Progressives.
My conservative friends are not going to leap to that conclusion easily, but seven years of practical experience shows two things: First, Obamacare needs some changes, and second, everything the GOP offers is going to make things worse.
The unsuccessful attempt to eviscerate Obamacare on the 50-something attempt can be viewed as a political defeat for Trump and conservatives. And it is. But it is also an opportunity to engage in some thoughtful conversations with people who think differently than we do.
They are screwing up tax reform too. Lobbyists and donors have too much power and politicians need them to get re-elected.
One the the best political things ever was the Simpson-Bowles report. It was bi-partisan. The politicians were retiring, so they didn’t have to worry about offending lobbyists or donors with recommendations. Both parties looked at it and said no way in hell. It’d completely alienate the people that fund their campaigns.
There are pros and cons buyinghouse. When the government runs healthcare, you frequently don’t get what you need when you need it, but at least if you can get it it’s free. Interesting video on Canadian health care–only way to get services was to pay for them at a private clinic:
The truth is that your best bet is making sure you have $$ in the bank to pay for private health care, and you keep yourself as healthy as possible through better lifestyle choices to reduce the risk of the chronic diseases.
@Terri Exactly! I’ve posted the data on Canadian wait times. Talk to anyone who’s Canadian about their system vs the US. Talk to someone who’s lived in England about theirs. The American system is better for a vast majority of people. The issue is 10% don’t have care, and we want to blow up the whole system over it. There are better ways to solve that problem.
This is a failure of Ryan, he can’t get enough support from the most conservative republicans. He was hiding his bill from many conservative members and do you still remember some conservative republicans protesting about that?
Ryan is not a strong enough leader. Republicans are still divided, Trump’s win did not solve the republican divisions.
Tax reform is more important. Trump can just wait for Ryan to work with his people to figure out what they can agree on healthcare, it may take a long time to figure out healthcare
lear at rallies over the past few weeks that healthcare was just something he needed to get through, in order to move on to the next thing. “We want a very big tax cut, but cannot do that until we keep our promise to repeal and replace the disaster known as ‘Obamacare,’” he told an adoring crowd at a rally in Louisville last week.
Personal Tax reform will be voted fine as everyone (in congress too) gets benefit out of it. Most of them are in top 1% and republicans are famous for generous tax break !
Corporate tax is the only issue that needs to be properly drafted. It directly helps local companies and local economy.
It’s hard to help people that already aren’t paying taxes. We depend on the top 20% for 87% of the income taxes. It’s difficult to cut income taxes for anyone else.
But republican team is famous for providing tax cuts to wealthy first, esp toppers then lowest tax break to low brackets !
Even trump and Ryan are aggressive on removing 3.8% ACA care tax which is applied only 250k or above income.
However, budget or revenue to run the government gets affected. They need to balance government income with tax cuts, that is the tricky situation.
Overall, tax reforms will definitely go good as both sides will support it. Corp tax reduction will help economy overall and lot of foreign funds will flow to USA.
