Google will not use health and wellness data from Fitbit for its ads, according to the announcement.
Sound like @manch saying people don’t wear watch

“The Tiger will turn vegeterian”
…Yet.
Growth mindset.
What’d they expect???
Another reason you need to go to the original document:
" *2. Do your part to keep Google a safe, productive, and inclusive environment for everyone. *
*While sharing information and ideas with colleagues helps build community, disrupting the workday to have a raging debate over politics or the latest news story does not. Our primary responsibility is to do the work we’ve each been hired to do, not to spend working time on debates about non-work topics. *
Avoid conversations that are disruptive to the workplace or otherwise violate Google’s workplace policies. Managers are expected to address discussions that violate those rules."
Seriously, if people are spending all day discussing news or politics instead of working, they’re not producing… The only exception would seem to me to be regarding any content that is being suppressed or banned. There should be discussions about why or whether that should happen.
Good for her. There’s certainly a line to be drawn, but right now a lot of companies are drawing it way too far the wrong way.
No, Fitbit is excellent app, their tracking is too good. I wear one, and clearly helping people identify the issues, esp exercise and sleeping patterns.
Now, google is buying Fitbit, excellent app, at throwaway price!
Google will soon, if I guess, have Fitbit as competitor to Apple Watch, seemlessly linking with pixel phone.
Pixel phone + Fitbit will be better option.
They are the same people that bought Motorola and within a year gave up on it.
What have they done with Nest? They had to buy Dropcam to add camera products. They also acquired Revolv and MyEnergy. They’ve spent billions and billions on it, and what’s the net result? The revenue is under $1B/yr with losses over $600M.
Google doesn’t know hardware. They are learning just like MSFT long ago. How long did MSFT manage to get their hardware Xbox to be profitable?
It depends on strategy. Like hanera said they do not have hardware. Taking over companies give technology, patent rights and customers…etc.
Fitbit was best , but they struggled for cash support. Fitbit can be easily turned as competitor to Apple Watch. If google does, as I guess, then their strategy is too good.
Regarding nest, it is like ADT security minus support like security/police alert. The quality is better and seem less integration with other good products such as google hub/home etc.
I don’t get buying a money losing company with declining revenue. If google just wants another hardware line to throw money at to generate losses, then it’s a good move. If they actually want a profitable business, then it’s a terrible move. They’ve been losing money on Nest for 5 years, and the $1B/yr in revenue is rounding error to google. There’s literally no path to profits on Nest and Fitbit will be more of the same.
Btw, I don’t use any of the healthcare apps of Apple Watch. By extension, no need for Fitbit.
I used both Apple watch and fitbit+iphone. Apple watch+Healthcare app is no match for FitBit. The unfortunate part of fit bit is small company, struggling to survive.
I was expecting Apple may take over FitBit at sometime, but now Google takes over.
This is like taking a fixer upper with a good structure and location.
Not likely to pass regulatory authority.
“Apple has been doing a ton of things in health and fitness, but Apple Watch users, when you ask them, are not saying they’re buying the Apple Watch only because of its health and fitness features,” Llamas said. “Apple is like the Swiss Army knife of smartwatches, whereas Fitbit focuses on health and fitness.”
and so I love Google so much.
I can imagine the convo afterwards.
Ascension: “Let’s review the protocols for transferring and storing the data.”
Google: “We already have all of it. Now you’ll start paying us for access to it.”
Can some1 tell Google to stop tailgating Apple. Can these biggies, FAAMG, not do the same thing? Can cover more industry that way. Can’t one or two of them go into agriculture, healthy food & beverage, and space travel?
“The reason for Google’s hardware existence is to be able to provide leading-edge ways to gather data on the consumers who have it and to be able to build profiles and subsequently provide advertising back to them,” said Patrick Moorhead, founder of Moor Insights & Strategy.
Sound like can’t collect data from Apple products, need to build theirs.
