Iâd love to know:
- What percent of the cost of a nail is steel?
- People have to get nails from somewhere. If 50% of the supply vanishes, where will people get nails? I doubt other manufacturers have enough spare capacity to make up the difference.
- Tell Chinese consumers to shun US goods - Best of luck with that. What next? Tell Chinese not to invest in US real estate, Yeah, thats gonna work!
-Create regulatory nightmares for US companies in China - China doesnât need to do that. Its already much worse for US corporates there. Why expose yourself by making it official.
-Undermine Trumpâs efforts to conclude nuclear deal with N. Korea - Yup, come to the point baby. Remember itâs not about trade

China is going to be a net loser. If they arenât they would not be waiting to match trump actions but taking proactive actions themselves. Absence of such actions itself prove that they have no option but to create a show of force (old communist way die hard). Trump knows that. He is calling that bluff.
I am not for trade wars. I am just curious what Trump wants China to do? Give up the aggression in South China sea without firing a single shot? May be. Bring the little Kim to table to give up Nukes and stop threatening Japan? May be. Any of these actions will get him a Nobel Peace prize for sure.
Chinese growth story built of internal investment fueled by trade surplus is going to get hit where it hurts the most. The trade surplus. Putting pressure on Yuan and bleeding the dollar reserve fast. May be thatâs what the intention is.

They are waiting for a tariff on finished steel goods. US can pay 20% higher for nails. But they wont pay that for the brand that is selling them 20% higher whereas the one next in the shelve is 20% cheaper. Itâs not a differentiated product.
Just hike the tariff on imported nails by 50%. Wait for the CEO to sing praises again.
