Uh Oh....The Layoffs Begin

Yes, this lay off was not a problem at all. This is was genuine and rightly conducted layoff. Much ado about nothing. Some people are upset because it does not fit their imagination of right way to fire employees no longer needed. We will come to name calling thing some other time.

Even if this were true, so what? Zillow laid off employees because of poor business decisions too. CEOs make mistakes all the time and cause employees to suffer. Big deal. Find another job if you think it’s unfair.

This is essentially the same as rent control. In the future we will have just-cause firing only. Employers need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the firing of the employee is justified. Otherwise government-provided free lawyers will be on the employers’ ass in no time.

Will there be reciprocal laws? Just-cause resignation only? If not, claw back RSUs?

Do you see any law that requires tenants to not move out?

.

There are reciprocal laws e.g. tenants need to make good if they moved out before the contract ends. Landlords need to make good if evict tenants before contract ends.

Again it’s not about just firing. @caiguycaiguy in previous post said it right.

Yes for the duration of the contract both sides need to honor the contract. But this is not the same. Rent control is mostly for after the contract duration.

If employer signed a contract to guarantee employment for a certain duration, then firing should not be allowed.

I don’t think that Better CEO will last too long himself. No need to be a jerk.

Why can’t a jerk be a CEO?

We collectively as the voice of the society decides that he is a jerk, so he cannot be a CEO. Is this how it’s supposed to be now?

His company will now have a severe disadvantage in attracting talents and investors. Succeeding in any competitive business environment is tough enough and Better has not been doing well. That’s why the layoffs happened in the first place.

The board and the VCs will have to ask the question is it worth it to have him around still. Remember Uber? The founder CEO was pushed out because he’s too much of a jerk. Culture became toxic under him.

Guess you are saying since rent control is one sided, so can just-cause firing. IMHO, America is moving in the wrong direction. Too much intervention by the government in private sector affairs.

I don’t see any evidence that he is a jerk. He is not nice, but that doesn’t automatically qualify him as a jerk. He points out that employees are working only 2 hours but getting 8 hours of pay, so he is fighting to correct that. He was calling names but honestly does that sound like a huge deal to you? I think elevating him to the same status as Uber is a little too fast.

We have learned that we need to be tolerant over the years. Many people don’t like LGBTQ+, but we as a society have learned to accept that because we want to treat everyone equally. We need to learn to be more tolerant in the other direction too. Now it feels like anything the “mainstream opinion” does not like needs to be completely rooted and condemned without the possibility of parole. If some employees are unhappy, then the culture must be toxic and the CEO must go. This won’t end well.

The founder was pushed out because there were Sex and Drugs at company events and the environment was toxic to women.

Toxic to women and toxic to underperformers are two different things.

Isn’t that a bit too melodramatic? He’s not going to jail. At worst he will just be let go, like the hundreds of people he must have personally fired over the years. He’s still filthy rich.

Do you really think 900 people are under performers? If true then company sucks for recruiting them in the first place. Also I’m confused why you guys believe his words as gospel without hearing the other side? He had erratic behavior even in the past fyi. Also I don’t understand how people are ok with name calling. It’s not a big deal but still if it’s ok then it shows slave mentality. Is cat calling women ok too since it’s not a big deal?

They are all people, and deserve to be treated with dignity. Seriously that’s about the most basic thing you can ask of a human being.

Very interesting. slackers, non-performers, rent stealers, druggist, prisonors, neighborhood destroyers deserve dignity.

And what should we do to honor these?

You forgot about rapists. Need to counsel them not to rape again. Don’t judge them. They deserve respect.

If you read blind, I guess the senior leadership other than vishal are also super shady/self serving. the CPO (left this summer) was a no name, young analyst who Vishal made CPO and showered a huge salary and lots of perks on. the reasons why were pretty graphic so won’t repeat them here. Supposedly, Vishal’s wife won’t let him leave NYC because he has cheated on her before and she doesn’t trust him to leave.

the whole thing is amusing. the recruiting impact is already being felt, with the interwebs of people not recommdending good talent to go to better.com unless they have no other option.

Equally amusing is the doggedness with which left is chasing Vikas. I just do not know what he is doing to trigger such a ferocious reaction from left that his private life is being tracked.
