Some news that’s actually about Seattle. Looks like Facebook doesn’t seem to think most of its employees will be remote for the long term. It keeps buying office real estate.

- Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is buying the new headquarters of Recreational Equipment Inc. - REI - near Seattle, for $367.6M.
- REI never even got to move in to the 400,000-square-foot space, as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way, and the company looked to cash out with employees working remotely.
- REI also sold undeveloped land on the property to Wright Runstad & Co., bringing its total take to $390M.
- And while Facebook employees are similarly working remotely, it’s one of a number of tech companies showing a strong appetite for real estate, and in fact driving the commercial market in the pandemic.
- Seattle has become Facebook’s biggest engineering hub outside its Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters; the REI deal brings its space in the Seattle area to more than 3M square feet.

BTW - fun facts - in terms of human trafficking Washington DC blows away every state - some by a factor of 60 or more. And it skyrocketed under Obama/Biden - before crashing under Trump. I wonder why?

I’m not at all surprised. Seattle city council might be the most inept group of elected officials in the country. I purposely refused to buy within city limits. They spent 4 years protesting Trump’s immigration policies instead of worrying about their actual city.

Yes. It’s really only Seattle that’s insane. The rest are far more moderate although they are all NIMBY. I read a restaurant owner interview. He said he went to a nearby city and had all his permits in 1 day to open a location. In Seattle, he was 6 months into the process and still didn’t have a permit.
It’s amazing the amount of white guilt here. I’m in a city that’s 81% white and 1.2% black. I bet 30% of people have up a BLM or generic we love all races, religions, sexual orientations, etc sign.
Isn’t no credit checks for rentals, insurance, … and no need academic performance are of similar nature as no-doc mortgage loan? What is the point of buying houses for rentals when we know the most critical factor is the tenant’s profile? How do insurance assess risk without creditworthiness? No academic record for schools (and college), why do we even need a piece of paper?

Michigan has what’s called no fault auto insurance. It means your own insurance pays for the damage to your car no matter what fault. The most you can get from someone is $500 to cover deductible. The end result is good drivers pay more, since the cost of bad drivers is spread among everyone. That’s the society they are trying to create. Prices will increase for everyone to account for risk if they can’t check credit score.
