Humanoid robots are hot so Mark Gurman conveniently pick the robotics skunk project to report. Sound like is not a humanoid since he uses the words, “home robot” instead of humanoid… Apple has been R&D home robotics for a long long long time.
For non-AAPL investors, less than 30% of R&D projects and patents filed see the light of the day.
Apple’s M3 Max chip is challenging the graphics performance hierarchy with its 40-core GPU, almost matching NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 and trailing the laptop RTX 4080 by a narrow 7% in GFXBench’s Aztec Ruins benchmark.
Power Efficiency: Notably, the M3 Max showcases commendable performance while maintaining power efficiency, a noteworthy feat against the 150W power draw of the RTX 4080 Laptop GPU.
Max power draw of M3 Max GPU is 56W. That is, in terms of power per watt, is 3 times better than NVDA GPU.
Going forward, is a battle of on device Gen AI vs cloud-based Gen AI… which technology approach do consumers prefer. Are there more people care about privacy protection or most people don’t care about their own privacy?
With the transition to Apple silicon, every Mac is a great platform for AI. M3 includes a faster and more efficient 16-core Neural Engine, along with accelerators in the CPU and GPU to boost on-device machine learning, making MacBook Air the world’s best consumer laptop for AI.
What about Gen AI/ LLM?
Combined with the unified memory architecture of Apple silicon, MacBook Air can also run optimized AI models, including large language models (LLMs) and diffusion models for image generation locally with great performance.
In addition to on-device performance, MacBook Air supports cloud-based solutions, enabling users to run powerful productivity and creative apps that tap into the power of AI, such as Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365, Canva, and Adobe Firefly.
Apple doesn’t need many server-end GPUs.
Opinion: Because of zero-brain loud mouths, Apple has to label their Macs as AI Macs.
EWT: No change.
Preferred count: Highly likely wave (V), a multi-year bull run about to start. The worse case is it will start from $125
Update: Very free so elaborate a bit about the three possible counts.
The battle of on-device AI… startups are rushing in to strike at Apple’s perceived weakness… SIRI.
BUT… is voice secured? I hate to use voice and definitely nervous to use voice to do financial transactions.
Simple minded parrots mindlessly repeat SIRI is way behind as if it matters. Why don’t these guys do critical transactions e.g. financial, using voice.
Early adopters turn out to be mostly businesses (and developers ofc) rather than professionals. Ofc, not poor startup CEOs and cheapskate social media influencers.
Semi development has a long lead time… Apple has been working quietly on AI for a long long long time… waiting for M4 (that would accelerate Gen AI/ LLM a lot) to be ready before announcing their Gen AI/ LLM effort (expected to be during Jun 10 WWDC).
My wish is Apple should at least build enough DCs for their uses, rather than keep paying MSFT/GOOG/AMZN. Ideally go into cloud computing business to f… with those guys and enhance their on-device AI with some cloud-based AI.
Thinking Aloud:
What is an AI-focused chip?
Apple silicon has a neural engine to accelerate ML AI. Does it mean M4 has a new neural engine that accelerate Gen AI/ LLM?
Apple silicon has a GPU that can accelerate AI in addition to its graphic acceleration. Do the GPU in M4 has been re-designed to significantly accelerate Gen AI/ LLM?
Called Ferret-UI, this multimodal large language model (MLLM) can perform a wide variety of tasks based on what it can see on your phone’s screen. Apple’s new model can for instance identify icon types, find specific pieces of text, and give you precise instructions for what you should do to accomplish a specific task.
I like how even the Apple cult now admits zero-growth in iPhone sales is the long term trend. Since 2015 it seems.
If iPhone shipment falling 10% is just reverting to old trend, how does the cult explain global shipment growth of 10% for everybody else? Overall growth of 8%, but Apple falling 10% so after taking Apple out the rest rises close to 10%.
So the secular trend is everybody else rising but Apple falling?
Globally, total first-quarter smartphone shipments rose 7.8% year over year to 289.4 million units, recording the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth, according to IDC.
Is why talking to idiots are terrifying. Bad memory. Flawed logic. Lack of in-depth analysis. Misquote others. Stubborn.
It has been mentioned many times here that smart phone market has stabilized for many years.
Unit sale and dollar sale are two different things.
Apple doesn’t just sell iPhones.
Accepting whatever is reported by mainstream media as truth is reflective of not using the brain. Hence his brain is so valuable.
