The story is that there are too many buyers (state govt, federal govt, and hospitals) chasing too few medical equipment and supplies. There is an unprecedented surge in demand. I cannot tell how real are the reports of these shortages. But, the producers of these supplies and equipment need to ramp up production so that no buyer can return empty. I am not clear how centralizing the purchase will make up for shortages, if they are there.
How does this article establish a disfunction other than being just a he-said-she-said story?
If it grows exponentially with or without lockdown, then what’s the point of lockdown? The whole point of lockdown is to stop the spreading. If it’s not doing that, then we stopped the economy for no reason.
NY is supposed to peak this week which would mean they won’t need 30,000.
It’s the same reason there is a run on essential supplies and TP. If the bottleneck is supply, you will need to implement a method for disbursement versus everyone for yourself.
A shortage of supplies can be handled. Once there is shortage of medical personnel then there will be a real shit show.
Lockdown is working (e.g. look at the Bay Area), but it is incredibly difficult to predict how well. There is an equilibrium between infected patients and healthy individuals. Growth is exponential with or without lockdown but the rate constant is different. New cases are offset by patients recovering (or dying). With a sufficiently low rate of infection the number of recoveries + deaths will start to exceed the number new cases and then this whole thing goes away.
Everyone is doing their best to model it but even Birx and Fauci admit that modeling how effective lockdowns/social distancing will be is extremely difficult. NY could well peak next week with 0.5M cases or they could be off by a week, in which case they run out of ventilators…
In yesterday’s media briefing, Dr. Birx said they expect peak deaths in New York next week. But she suggested (or the way I understood), the infection rate has probably peaked out. There is a lag of a week between peak infection and peak death. Next week will be critical. If it comes out as expected (high death and low new infection). We can safely call this pandemic under control and start thinking of opening up the society and economy.
A disgruntled buyer will accuse a single procurement agency of favoring one buyer over the other when the supply is not enough for everyone.
Bay Area tech companies asked employees to work from home long before local cities and counties went into lockdown, and that in turn was a week before California the state went into lockdown. We were weeks ahead of NY and that’s why outcome is so drastically different. Both are on exponential growth but the different exponents dictate vastly different outcomes.
Tech understands network effect and exponential growth better than any other industry. They are in our everyday vocabulary. Big part of the reason why we took drastic actions even when case load seemed low. Many of us knew that’s just because we were at the bottom of the hockey stick. Things will get real scary real fast if we waited.
Buy from local fishermen. Free delivery over $100.
I think that may be because Westchester is mostly infected and over it. ![]()
No, that is not the implication.
Prices aren’t bad for a local fishery.
I hear that local CSA memberships are higher than ever. Interesting side effect of COVID.
Prices are surprisingly reasonable. These are fresh seafood in the wild. Not the usual farm raised crap.
In NY. What about Florida? Louisiana? Illinois? Michigan?
There’s a supermarket on Noreiga and 31st super selection of live fish. A lot of times will have wild fish too.
