Ugh. Just found out from a friend, she has a doctor-friend who infected other family members through a dog as well. He was in isolation but the dog was allowed to visit him.

During the past several weeks, growers have seen large fluctuations in lettuce prices, which have fallen as many restaurants have closed.

“Demand for fresh produce, the leafy green produce, has really kind of dropped off,” said Steve Alameda, a grower who runs the company Top Flavor Farms. “We have no idea how long that’s going to last, but we’re anticipating that could be at least two months long.”

Demand drop because of closure of restaurants. So drop in supply of labor shouldn’t be an issue right? Because need to harvest them regardless? Why then we, consumers worry, about food shortages?

Thirty-Eight Crew Members on Disney Wonder Reportedly Test Positive for COVID-19

Crew members employed on the Disney Wonder reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, according to several employees on the ship who wish to remain anonymous.

Yesterday around 6:30 P.M. the captain of the Disney Wonder announced over the ship’s intercom that 38 crew members on the cruise ship are positive for the virus.

Previously, the Disney Wonder sailed from New Orleans to the Port of San Diego, arriving on March 19th, where the passengers all disembarked. According to a local news station in San Diego, none of the 1,980 passengers or crew members, except for one crew member who had influenza, showed COVID-19 symptoms at the time.

The developing wisdom—earned the hard way in Wuhan, Washington, and Italy—has been that older people and sicker people are substantially more likely to suffer severe illness or die from COVID-19 than their younger, healthier counterparts.

However…

The numbers emerging seem to indicate that more young people in the South are dying from COVID-19. Although the majority of coronavirus-related deaths in Louisiana are still among victims over 70 years old, 43 percent of all reported deaths have been people under 70. In Georgia, people under 70 make up 49 percent of reported deaths. By comparison, people under 70 account for only 20 percent of deaths in Colorado.

The reasons could be…

The South is the poorest region in the country. The poor, black, Latino, or rural residents who make up large shares of southern populations tend to lack access to high-quality doctors and care.

Southerners are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases than other Americans—even as Americans are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases than citizens of other countries with comparable wealth.

“Due to high rates of conditions like lung disease and heart disease and obesity, the people living in these states are at risk if they get the virus,” Neuman told me.

88 yrs old, heart and kidney disease, cancer and diabetes
86 yrs old,
75 yrs old, chronic heart disease and hypertension
64 yrs old, heart disease
70 yrs old, hypertension and high cholesterol
68 yrs old, diabetes and hypertension

No need PPE? Only wear a surgical mask.

People are hoarding canned food with no money left for fresh, healthy food. The produce sections are in good shape except for a few missing items like kiwi’s - no doubt due to virus related supply chain disruptions.
No sympathy for farmers using illegal labor to harvest crops. They should have automated. Even things like lettuce can easily be grown illegal-free (hydroponics) and those systems use 60% less water - an issue here in AZ.

Well my county shot up 50% over the weekend. We went from 2 to 3 cases. Fortunately case #3 is travel related and they isolated soon after getting home.

I grew up on canned and frozen food. It is good enough during this plague. It is disgusting how people paw and inspect every piece of fresh produce. I told my wife not to buy anything unless it’s in a bag. No fresh fruit or veggies that could be exposed to virus.

All my fresh stuff is either thoroughly rinsed, cooked, or both. The exception is berries but they aren’t in bulk bins so the only handling is during harvest. The nuts are but no one picks through the nuts to get the best ones.

How does demand drop? People have to eat… Do they not eat salads at home?? I don’t think the # of deaths we’ve seen would explain any drop in eating.

I did buy a couple of extra bags of frozen veggies, but we’ve been doing the same or more on veggies especially now that the kids are home and I can force them to have veggies at lunch whereas they wouldn’t take them at hot-lunch.

50% of food ends up in the landfill. I’m sure restaurants are a huge part of that due to uncertainty of demand. People cooking at home probably results in less food in landfills which lowers demand.
