The ship of doom is coming to Oakland!
Time to scramble from 7x7.
âItâs not the virus thatâs cruel to the weak,â a South Korean newspaper posited last week. âItâs our society, civic groups say, thatâs shoved them into isolated environments ideal for the virus to thrive.â
Boy oh boy. What say you @manch
Italy is no longer a joke. The joke is on us.
New case add in Korea seems to be slowing down. I think the worst is over for Korea. Itâs starting to turn the corner.
China will mostly be back at work starting next Monday. Things are looking up in there as well.
We will report more new cases than China in a few days.
@manch finally found articles published by America that support Singaporeâs Phua had known and said long ago. Those articles conveniently ignore the existence of Tropics. Tropics have high temperature and humidity, a look at the situation there now tells you much about Covid-19 - there is no need to wait till Summer to know. Of course, aircon-to-aircon negates the advantages of Tropical climate. As I said many times, live in an air-ventilated (no air-con) house in Tropics. Btw, is well known (not sure is known to HKers) that warm weather is good for elders especially those have respiratory issues and rheumatism.
Notice nations with large population like Brazil (212,559,417 people), Indonesia (273,523,615 people), Philippines (109,581,078 people) hardly have any cases. Of course, @manch would claim that they are not diligent in testing.
So SWEs and Economists are also expert virologists and doctors?
Btw, using China as the bogeyman no longer work.
After 10 weeks, still donât know why kids donât get that sick. Although there are no new info, the article did summarize how coronavirus works pretty well - a good read for those who have not been following the development that closely. Few points bear highlighting,
second stage, the one that often led to death, wasnât caused by the virus at all, but by patientsâ runaway immune systems. For reasons that still arenât clear, some people, especially the old and sick, werenât able to turn off their inflammatory response, leading immune cells and inflammation-inducing molecules known as cytokines to flood into the lungs. This so-called âcytokine stormâ caused the most severe symptoms of the disease: pneumonia, difficulty breathing, and organ damage.
I believe the drugs under clinical trials are testing its efficacy in stopping the runaway immune system.
First stage is the normal immune system killing the virus and 80% of the people doesnât have 2nd stage as viruses destroyed and immune system returns to normal.
âAs people age, that lung environment changes. It gets pelted with pollen and pollution and the body responds with inflammation. A history of inflammation may impact how well you do with coronaviruses.â
Is the best hypothesis to explain why children under 10 doesnât get that sick as they have non-inflammatory pristine lung. Consistent with the high death rates in China, air pollution
Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: GILD) today announced the initiation of two Phase 3 clinical studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of remdesivir in adults diagnosed with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). These randomized, open-label, multicenter studies will enroll approximately 1,000 patients at medical centers primarily across Asian countries, as well as other countries globally with high numbers of diagnosed cases, beginning in March
Today is Mar 8, need two weeks for some prelim results. Have they started?
Noted only need 25-30% success rate to be considered effective - did I understand correctly?
Just an FYI: There are people who are saying that there wonât be a summer break pointing to Signapore as an example.
That said summer break does mean more Vitamin D, more exercise, and more distance between kids at many summer camps, so I can see that something will change but maybe not full out stop the way people are hoping.
Singapore having the virus doesnât automatically mean that summer wonât slow it down. Itâs all about probability. Summer may have a high probability of slowing down the contagion but itâs not 100%.
Also, what matters is the entire northern hemisphere, where most of humanity live, warming up. People who visited or came from China, Japan or Europe, where the weather is cold now, could have contracted the disease and bring it to tropical countries like Singapore. SARS spread to tropical countries like Singapore too but eventually burned itself out when the entire northern hemisphere went into summer.
This administration is nothing but clowns
At first I told @Jil that Summer wonât work using Singapore as an example, then I realize Singaporeans go from air-con to air-con.
Is why I said,
because it becomes a temperate climate. So in order to benefit from the tropics, you need toâŚ
Btw, in case you didnât read the article below. According to the article, typical traits of coronavirus are:
- Coronavirus is unstable and will burn itself out. Sars virus burns itself out in 8 months.
- Coronavirus canât survive the high temp and humidity of Tropics such as Singapore.
