Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 Covid-19

Increased freedom means increased risk. A price most of us are willing to take.

Like driving without a seatbelt?

Driving without a seatbelt only has negative consequences. Getting the economy back on track is a huge positive with a slight increase in covid19 deaths. Wear masks and get this economy rolling or SIP for the next two years or welcome a 1930 style Great Depression

We, as a country, can’t even agree on that!

comparing masks with seatbelt laws is a false equivalence.

Law to make seatbelts mandatory was first passed in 1984 almost 100 years after invention of automobiles.

Per wiki, Seatbelt is still not mandatory in NH.
And police cannot stop/cite people as primary offence for not wearing seat belts in a large number of states.

Summary: It took almost 4-5 generation to understand and reach a consensus on effectiveness of seat belts. There was a body of knowledge and experience to support the consensus.

Can we say the same for face masks?

No but at least wearing one is polite and sensible. I have no problem wearing one as long as it gets the economy going. Otherwise the country is doomed. SIP, free money and ripping off landlords is not sustainable.

Plenty of people still disagree on use of seat belts Today. Plenty of people don’t wear them in backseats…

:mask:
on.

Ok, I gotta go out and spend some money.

Is it working i.e. ending SIP? Looks like CA , TX, AZ have to close again due to ending SIP and subsequent surges in numbers ?

Of course ending SIP is working. Without opening the economy and allowing people to go out and mix, how would you understand the character of pandemic. With new knowledge, the authorities are able to tweak the strategy. I do not think anyone is returning to March/April like SIP. The good thing to came out of this is the confirmation that this virus is not at all as deadly as was presumed earlier.

The “most comprehensive study to date” found that physical distance and perhaps the use of a mask were the two best ways to prevent transmission of the new coronavirus.

The new study, published in the Lancet medical journal Monday, found people should stay at least three feet apart and more if possible.
The review of various published studies, paid for by the World Health Organization, had three main findings:
Physical distancing: The chance of transmission at a distance of less than 1 meter (3.3 feet) was 12.8%, while that fell to 2.6% at a distance of more than 1 meter (3.3 feet). It added that distances of 2 meters (6.6 feet) could be more effective. It said that the certainty of the evidence was “moderate.”
Face masks: The chance of transmission without a face mask or respirator (like an N95 mask) was 17.4%, while that fell to 3.1% when a mask was worn. However, the certainty of the evidence was “low.”
Eye protection: The chance of transmission without eye protection was put at 16%, compared to 5.5% with some form of eye protection as a face shield, visor, goggles or glasses. However, the certainty of the evidence was “low.”

Why did CA, TX reimpose it then?

They have not reimposed them back they were in april. Please tell me if you have some different knowledge.

All the studies and theories of masking and distancing is fine in labs. People have to test and feel it in real life for them to be accepted.

What’s our alternative? SIP until there’s a vaccine and have another Great Depression?

People are focusing on how many positive tests. Meanwhile, deaths have been in a steady decline. The median age of positive tests dropped from 50 to 33. These are people who will survive it fine. They don’t even breakdown how many positives are a symptomatic, and we weren’t even testing those people before. Just look at all the college and pro athletes that have tested positive. They wouldn’t even have been tested if it wasn’t required, since they didn’t have symptoms. Of course as we start testing more and more people the number of positive tests will increase. This is just revealing what some knew months ago. There are far more a symptomatic carriers than there are people with symptoms. Then add in positives from states are running antibody tests, and positive test results are increasing.

We should be measuring hospital capacity. SIP is designed to keep hospitals below max capacity. The only places that should use it are places in danger of running out of capacity. We almost bankrupted hospitals by over reacting the first wave.

One of the biggest benefit to come out of ending SIP is allowing people to earn their living and not having to do another round of stimulus which will only hurt the economy.

To hurt Trump supporters. SIP was a direct assault on small businesses and workers.
Of course it was ok to riot and go to pot dispensaries. They are essential but your local shoe store was not.

Karma is a bitch. My friend who owns Tahoe Wellness pot dispensary said the looters are now targeting pot dispensaries. Lots of pot and cash. Police are not enforcing looting laws, only arresting people that want to cut your hair of open up their gyms.

CA governor is asking harder hit counties to reimpose SIP. Why is he asking to do that if his tax revenue which is already in the doldrums will be further negatively affected? Don’t tell me Newsom hates tax revenues

Only Trump supporters businesses got hurt?

Of course it was NOT ok to do this. One of the reasons for this increase in numbers are the protests(which in my view were orchestrated due to elections in 4 months). Of course, the MSM won’t report that as a reason for the flare up.

125K deaths and counting in 4 months is slight increase?

Is Germany/South Korea/Taiwan/Japan’s local economy as bad as US and that too without such large stimulus?
Point is IF US would have taken early and quick steps it could have controlled it, without such effect on the economy. Even now, this accelerate and brake repeatedly is having a bad and worse effect.

Alternative is

  1. Social Distancing
  2. Wear a Mask

Remember Social Distancing is NOT shelterInPlace(SIP)
