Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 Covid-19

6:00 pm: Cases top 300,000 worldwide as US becomes one of worst hit countries
The number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus, or COVID-19, has crossed 300,000 as the disease continues to spread around the world, with the situation in the U.S., Italy and Spain deteriorating even as the pandemic has stabilized in China, where the virus first emerged.

At least 303,180 people have tested positive for the virus worldwide as of Saturday at 5:13 pm ET, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The number of cases in the U.S. has surged to at least 24,148, making it one of the worst hit countries in the world. Only China, Italy and Spain are harder hit than the U.S. — Spencer Kimball, Emma Newburger

Maio took credit for China’s help, which he linked to his China policy and to his phone call with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on March 10, two days before the delivery of supplies from China.

In reality the supplies had been sent by agreement between the Chinese and the Italian Red Cross. As is customary between branches of the Red Cross in different countries, the Chinese Red Cross reciprocated for the help received from the Italian Red Cross only one month earlier, when Italy sent 18 tons of supplies to Wuhan. The call between Di Maio and Wang Yi concerned not the Red Cross donation, but the purchase by Italy of a large quantity of much-needed ventilators (artificial respiratory devices) for intensive care units. Several European countries were competing with each other to receive this equipment first, and Di Maio pleaded with Wang Yi to put Italy at the top of the list. The ventilators have not yet been delivered to date.

The Chinese propaganda machine was quick to seize the opportunity and posted videos of grateful Italians praising China for its generosity. One video even showed Italians singing China’s national anthem from their balconies (it was, however, a fake). These videos have Chinese subtitles and were probably made with a Chinese audience in mind.

I knew George Stewart. He was a colleague of my dad. My mother helped edit one of his books. The Earth Abides is a great read.
He best know for Ordeal by Hunger. A book about the Donner Party.

Infowar going on.
Must I have to keep verifying? Tired.
One mud didn’t stick, now another mud.
Should I believe the Italian politicians (yes s) or a news site on Asia-PAC based in Washington D.C. about Italian affairs?

The Spanish Flu happened while half the world was fighting in WWI. Way worse than now, and the flu was much more deadly too. It’s helpful to read about that period to get some perspective.

Daily test capacity update.

Trying to answer @britt522’s question: why Italy?

Yet another article without much substance. But, thankfully, it is short and easy to read, unlike those form the New York Times that wander aimlessly for long and then end without a meaning.

Part of the problem is Italian culture. Everyone hugs and kisses. Transmission is very quick. My retired friends in Cabo are coming back to Tahoe. The Mexicans are not taking social distancing seriously plus they are at risk and afraid the health care system will get overwhelmed quickly.
Most people would rather be in the US if they are sick.

My wife is a hugger and loves socializing and is going stir crazy. Personally I love being alone and am looking forward to reading books. Definitely recommend The Earth Abides. A story of a mass epidemic that kills almost everyone. And how evidence of human civilization slowly disappears and how the earth becomes natural again like in Chernobyl.

At any given time, we are surrounded by the threats of various kinds. Not all of them lethal. You take my blood test and chances are you will find tons of pathogens. Not a big deal. Even if everyone in USA is infected, how many will actually experience some serious symptoms and or die?

And also, looks like chlorquine is emerging as an effective treatment for almost all infected people. Govt should revoke shutdown order as soon as possible. More danger from an economy not working.

Don’t use the existing number but try to look 1 - 2 months ahead if no action is taken
This thing spreads at exponential rate. let’s say 1 million infected, out of these 1 million people 5 % needs bed, that’s 50,000 icu bed you need, it doubles every couple days okay.
Then when hospital out of bed, death rate will skyrocket. Not only the covid-19, but all other patients. continue to do nothing millions of people will die and don’t tell me that will not affect the economy

One of the neighbors work at hospital. they have 7 bed, planning to incresae to 25. for our city if 5% needs bed, the number is 3750. 3750 for 25 bed.

Please explain the worst case scenario. What if everyone is infected.

Elt is right. Chloroquine has troublesome side effects including potentially irreversible retinal damage. It’s not as bad as chemo but it isn’t advil either. Read the FDA label. Worth it if it makes a 10–20% improvement in a life-threatening case of Covid? Absolutely. Taken chronically as a prophylactic? Very tough sell.

Our medical system will collapse, millions of people will die because of lack of treatment
Think of grasshopper, a couple no harm. Once turn into locust and reproduce rapidly into tens and millions . it can destroy great

Exactly for the reason it is not available over the counter as ADVIL is. But, is it not toxic. All most all medicine have side effects. I am sure if you read ADVIL flyer , it will have some too. Chloriquine is in use since 1953. Tons of lawsuit would have come out if it was what people are making it out to be.
At the end of the day, do not take it if you do not like what is written in the FDA flyer.

Added later for the satisfaction of @DH0
I checked the dictionary meaning of Toxic. It is defined as capable of causing death. I do not know what is the academic meaning of this word as it relates to the drug industry. So, if toxicity means some of the side effect you mentioned, I defer to you.

Retinal TOXICITY. i.e. if you take too much you go blind. That is the definition of toxic. Tylenol is also TOXIC– too much and it will shred your liver. I work in the industry. The old drugs are often the worst because they went on the market before our current strict regulatory structure was in place. Chloroquine, Tylenol and frankly even Advil would never be approved in 2020 and probably wouldn’t have even made it to human testing because of their TOXICITIES.

Understood your point. But, the drugs that have longer history are better understood than what can be understood on lab conditions. Please ask FDA to revoke approval on chloroquine if you really believe what you said.

Just telling it like it is. Even the most toxic drugs have a use case. Look at toxicity of chemo – it may be ok to have your kidneys melted if it gives you 12 more months to survive cancer. Same thing with chloroquine – if you have a life-threatening case of malaria it is worth the risk.

Btw, side effects and toxicity are very different things. ‘Side effects’ mean you will feel dizzy/nauseous/have a headache. Toxic means it turns it turns your liver/kidney/retina into vegetable juice.
