Gavin Newsom Will Be President One Day

Uh, I’m trying ova’ here, but no one is biting just yet…

Signed,

Scott Wiener

Krugman is a fan of Gavinator.

There’s a reason his socialist drivel is labeled opinion. If it was up to him, the government would tell us how often we’re allowed to poop. I’m sure they’d tax anyone that goes too often, since that’d be proof they eat too much and are wasteful.

What exactly is socialism? Is Europe socialist? Singapore and Hong Kong are among the most economically free societies and they both have public funded healthcare and lots of public housing.

There is a lot more nuance than the socialism-capitalism dichotomy.

Read the New Jersey thing. They lowered premiums by taking high risk people and putting them in a reinsurance pool where the state reimbursed for losses. Thst was a Republican proposal and democrats cried it’d leave people dying without care. Of course if you remove the highest risk people the rates decrease significantly. Then you have to charge more on taxes to cover the reinsurance costs. Moving money from insurance premiums to taxes collected isn’t saving money. It’s just shifting who pays.

Everyone in Europe pays high effective tax rates. They aren’t trying to make the top 1% fund all the programs.

Uh, start building boys…

Transportation and housing are tied together…High density housing is the only solution…But I doubt Gavin has the vision or horsepower to solve the problem

Uh, he just proposed a policy that frankly no one else in the past has proposed or realistically had the fortitude to see through. The very real chance that you will lose funding is there. How can a city, any city, not take that threat seriously? If it were me, I would open the flood gates to more building and use Gav as the scapegoat. He wants you to, doesn’t everyone get it? Blame the Gov! Hey, we had to loosen the building rules because we were going to lose money for other important needs of the city. What were we supposed to do? Yes, even idiot NIMBys will have to semi accept it because otherwise then they will become effectively the reason why no funds were received for X project. See, up until now, when NIMBYs stopped a housing project there was no other ramification other than well losing that additional housing. Now, game changer. At the very least, a novel approach and certainly one that we should try. Again, no harm in trying something to move the status quo.

This anti growth pro regulation system in place has created the greatest housing shortage in history. The pro growth post WW2 can-do attitude was destroyed in the 70s. We haven’t recovered since.
It is so bad that even builders believe in all the nymbycrap, EPA and zoning restrictions. The can do spirit of our fathers has been replaced by the woe is me victim attitude of Boomers and later generations.
My buddy built 1800 homes in San Carlos on hilly lots in one year in 1952. That kind of energy and capacity has been taken out us . Now everyone has input and nothing gets done. It will take a sea change revolution to change current thinking. All building officials should be fired. Allow unfettered growth for 5 years. To hell with zoning, permits, even codes. They are all designed to stop growth.

Can’t do anything about the past. The question is what will it take for cities to get the message. Gav’s idea just might do it. Why should a Lafayette or a Millbrae be able to skirt any building whatsoever? Every city has to contribute. Yeah, that means you, Brisbane! You’re lucky we didn’t annex your arse back then…

He judges progress based on how many new laws Congress comes up with.
I judge progress by the drop in the page count of the CFR. That and of course a 50% increase in the GDP growth rate, unemployment at a near 5 decade low, rising wages, falling inflation, ISIS all but destroyed, the corrupt mess in the AG’s office cleaned up and on and on and on.

Wow, Gavin is not kidding around…

Well, there goes my thread… (for now)

Gavinator makes national news.

Yes we need to sue all the NIMBY’s out of existence. It’s about time. Next step send in our homeless army to annex Brisbane!

+5 to that.

Again, Gavin has at least the business background in him so I hope he will at least think from that perspective more often than not.

But who are his “customers”? If he sees business owners and landlords as his customers (ie, those who donate to his campaign), you’re good. If he sees the masses (ie, those who vote for him to get handouts) as his customers, you’re screwed.

That’s the whole reason the founders designed it so only tax payers could vote.

Everybody pays payroll tax and sales tax in CA. We are all taxpayers.
