How Trump has handled the pandemic

I feel the lockdown came at just the right time in the Bay Area. If it was earlier the powers that be would have been accused of overreacting. Any later (like NY) and it would have gotten out of control. The areas the government screwed up are testing and access to medical equipment. Two months from now the coronavirus will still be a major issue but access to widespread testing would allow folks to get back to work. Healthcare workers and people working with the elderly (e.g. nursing homes) should be getting tested weekly. Less at risk groups should require a negative test to go back to work. If any new positives develop their families and co-workers should be tested. Widespread testing is the only way to end the lockdown and allow folks to safely go back to work.

Eldorado county just got our first victim. Of course a tourist. She is fine but how many did she infect? But tests have limited use. You can be negative today but positive tomorrow.

Testing, tracing and tracking. Americans need to accept being tracked. But after weeks of lockdown I bet people won’t mind exchanging a little bit of privacy for freedom.

So you have zero issue with suppressing what doctors were saying and punishing doctors that told the truth? That’s literally a Chernobyl behavior of you replace doctor with scientist.

That literally is the issue. They hid the fact it could be transmitted human to human. That changes everything. Originally, people thought you could only get it locally, and it wouldn’t spread. They found out it was spreading human to human and hid it.

I think they are not sure. If it is so easy to be sure, we could have stopped the spread long ago.

Are you claiming the two articles are wrong or did you not read them?

It’s amazing you’re claiming 3 weeks isn’t significant when 3 weeks ago the US had 54 cases.

If you listen to the daily press conference Trump is already treating this like WWIII (against his presidency). Cold war against China will be his last chance for reelection.

i think more like WORLD +HK+TAIWAN vs china,
china is all out putting out bs article say US virus. They pretend do good things sending medical team to italy, but charge them arm and leg and selling ridiculous price for masks. Like after raping you , then i’ll help with your recovery, Worse POS country , XI and his people is a DISGRACE to chinese people

I am expecting press to calm down going forward and be less hysterical. They are only making Trump appear in charge and in control of this crisis. I posted this on another forum.

Trump approval climbs up faster than COVID-19 virus’s ability to spread across.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday reports that 55 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s management of the public health crisis, while 43 percent disapprove. The latest figures represent a boost in the president’s rating from the previous iteration of the survey, published one week ago, which showed only 43 percent approval for Trump and 54 percent disapproval.

Having a common enemy brings people together. Even some liberals agree with his naming convention of the virus. Psychologies change once your own life is disrupted. Everybody has a little bit of NIMBYism in them.

WOAH! Hard to keep up with you guys!

Couple of comments regarding last 3 days of comments:

  1. Why are any of you taking medical advice from Trump? Of course he’s probably wrong.

  2. I’ll stick with Korea and Diamond Princess stats. if you want to know current # of cases, take current deaths and divide by .006 or .008. So if there have been 19 fatalities in CA, then we have 2400 to 3200 cases. NYC has a .5% death rate, so infected is probably somewhat accurate.

  3. @elt1, I’m honored you’d like me to be your VP

  4. Kaiser recently sent this… Does NOT bode well for testing–seems to me you should get tested if someone near you was infected:

Remember, you don’t need to be tested if you aren’t showing symptoms

If you are concerned that you or a family member are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, please contact us first before coming in, as you need an appointment to get tested. COVID-19 tests are only available by a doctor’s order for high-risk patients who meet specific criteria.

If your doctor determines you do need a test, you won’t have to pay for costs related to COVID-19 screening or testing.

  1. I’m seeing a lot of conflicting information regarding who is ending up in the hospital. Some people say that lots of people age 20-50 are in the hospital, but that stats that I think manch posted (3 days ago) still show highest percentage of hospitalization seems to be the elderly. Wish there was clarity on that, because otherwise it feels like fear-mongering.

  2. I agree with DH0 that the lockdown was just right and that any earlier and it would’ve been overreacting. Also gave people time to gradually stock up  Or at least me since I planned early.

  3. I see a lot of people using those death charts wrong. Oh look, we’re heading towards Italy. Lower number are better. But if you were Iceland and only had 1000 deaths, you’d be in deep trouble.

Nice perspective. never thought on this matter like this.

Did you see the squabble between an NBC reporter and Trump? Please do if you have not. Its on youtube. Actually, today’s entire press conference was like watching a nice entertainment show. Jokes aside, you will know why Trump only appears stronger when the target of the press not the Pandemic, but the President. What you will also notice is that not just the squabble with the NBC reporter, but even the reporters who followed it, were not letting it go.

so you’re blaming trump for learning from the experience in china??

He didn’t give credit to China so is his :grinning: proposal.

China said the drug works = 100% true
Trump said the drug works = 100% false
Both statements are true. They must be.

I think I posted the translated version. Basically, 99% of deaths had one other major illness. Almost half had 3 major illnesses.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-18/99-of-those-who-died-from-virus-had-other-illness-italy-says

No one cares. It doesn’t for the their it’s all Trumps’s fault emotions. The info can’t be processed.

Oh ok. I guess I missed it. Because I’ve been trying to figure out what the risk factors are.

Interestingly, there’s a huge amount of Diabetes in certain populations. For example, Asians can end up with diabetes at a lower BMI than caucasians, and diabetes seems to hit harder groups that have only recently transitioned to a western diet (ie native americans). Apparently there’s a huge problem in the Hispanic community as well. But that particular issue could explain a lot of the younger cases.

I’d be curious to know why diabetes is a risk factor.
