Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

Already got a job for Yoda at Burger King buddy:

Tell Big Bro to pass it down to the grandkids.

What are the ā€œtells?ā€ Surely you big bro raise his kids to be thrifty, to economize, to never take a dollar for granted, no?

Well, it takes two to tango, right? Big Bro is like me, but even more thrifty. Mrs. Big Bro though is another story. One kid is somewhat dilly dallying and is now doing a graduate degree program that is of dubious value. I would say that is a tell for me. Kids that are professional students. Yes, some graduate degrees have value, but not all.

Just because you are one way doesnā€™t guarantee the kid that you raised will turn out to be like you. Never put too much expectation onto your children. Thatā€™s a recipe for unhappiness.

A friend of my family - instrumental in helping my father get established in the US after he escaped from behind the iron curtain - never worked in the conventional sense. He married into wealth. But he had a fascination with the archeology of the American southwest and made some significant contributions despite having no formal education in the field. So it is possible to not work, at least for money, and still contribute to society. In fact you may contribute more that you would as a cog in the machine working for a paycheck. The fellow also taught the kids about ā€œgenerational wealthā€ and how not to blow it.

I guess I am interested in how did his kids actually turn out. Teaching is one thing, action is another when the parents are gone. Did they continue his legacy or go counter and blow all his money on cheap booze and women (men)???

Ohhhhh. That is a big deal. I find that it is very difficult to build in a specific value system into kids if they receive two different messages from two different parents. The messaging needs to be consistent.

I agree that giving kids the latitude to choose their own way through life improves the chances for happinessā€¦ whether that way is through the arts, science, religion, philanthropy, business, whatever.

However, oneā€™s path through life should always be grounded in a specific value system - for me, I try to instill a value system of grit, resilience, thrift, industry, economy, embrace of failure, and a passion for lifelong learning. It remains to be seen if I. am successful at this.

The ironic thing though is, Mrs. BB is quite the gamer when it comes to helping out with the DIY home and investment property maintenance chores of my BB. She is usually there, painting or helping with the electric sockets, etc. Why they did not be a tad tougher on their kids is a big question for me. First of all, I would have dragged the boy (school work permitting) to every weekend housing chore so that he can learn and also do it himself when he is the big boss and more importantly the owner.

Lifelong learning is too stressful. I think Iā€™m just going to blow away some of my windfall in the casino. I can afford itā€¦

I havenā€™t kept track of them since they got out of school but they just didnā€™t seem the cheap booze and cheap women types - or even the expensive booze and Elliot Spitzer caliber hookers types. A lot of it was being raised with an emphasis on academic pursuits and the arts.
Of course even that can backfire. I have a cousin who is moneyed and married to a very accomplished wife. They have highly refined tastes and travel extensively. They have two children. One has decided to be an actor; the other a jazz musician  Good thing they have money.

Although I still say you should find a wifeā€¦ (gal I had in mind for you decided to stay with BF, dumb)

As long as the paychecks keep coming, we can ride out anythingā€¦

You breathing? Check.

Yes, Youā€™re Hired. No, We Donā€™t Need to Meet You First.

In a Reddit forum dedicated to Boeing Co., multiple users described being hired after phone interviews for entry-level positions. Former Boeing recruiters said the company hired sight unseen, particularly for tough-to-fill technical positions and engineering roles.

A Boeing spokeswoman said the company aims to hire a diverse workforce from the most qualified pool. ā€œWith almost 1 million applicants a year, we strive to create a contemporary candidate experience that uses the most current practices in candidate assessment,ā€ she said.

Jodi Dean, an elementary English language development teacher in Tulsa, Okla., completed one phone interview with a school principal and received a conditional job offer days later.

The holiday hiring crunch may be over, but finding workers wonā€™t be much easier this year.
