South Lake Tahoe prices going nuts

Finally good news in South Lake Tahoe. Looks like the fire is staying south of town.

Glad to note this and let us hope for continued containment today.

Heavenly is running its snow machines to save it like Sierra at Tahoe did. Fire could race up heavenly and keep going to Minden. All wind dependent

@Elt1 Hopefully things will get better soon.

Sorry to post the following link here. But responsibility must be fixed about what is going on. All of this could have been prevented, CA had enough warnings in the last 2-3 years. The Dutch have made Dikes for the last 2000 years and reclaimed oceans and we can’t even manage wildfires.

But two-and-a-half years later, as California approaches what could be the worst wildfire season on record, it does so with little evidence of the year-round attention Newsom promised.

An investigation from CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom found the governor has misrepresented his accomplishments and even disinvested in wildfire prevention. The investigation found Newsom overstated, by an astounding 690%, the number of acres treated with fuel breaks and prescribed burns in the very forestry projects he said needed to be prioritized to protect the state’s most vulnerable communities. Newsom has claimed that 35 ā€œpriority projectsā€ carried out as a result of his executive order resulted in fire prevention work on 90,000 acres. But the state’s own data show the actual number is 11,399.

Overall, California’s response has faltered under Newsom. After an initial jump during his first year in office, data obtained by CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom show Cal Fire’s fuel reduction output dropped by half in 2020, to levels below Gov. Jerry Brown’s final year in office. At the same time, Newsom slashed roughly $150 million from Cal Fire’s wildfire prevention budget.

I agree. But Newsom and his ilk don’t understand the problem at all. Fire mitigation can not be achieved without going backwards to a time before the Cal Berkeley forestry programs were installed. We need to clear cut forests creating huge fire breaks… the way things were done for 100 years. The Berkeley idea was it is natural to let forests burn like in the natural world… before we put homes in forests. These current fires are the result of no forest management or logging for 50 years.
The old method of clear cutting forests and replanting was effective forest management worked. The tree huggers no management system puts human lives at risk. Time to go back to logging

Maybe in 20 years CA’s excessive fuel load will finally all be burned off. I see no alternative plan coming out of Sacramento.
Not sure if I posted this already -

That is the probable outcome. Could be good news for South Lake Tahoe since we are getting clear cut by fire now. It will take 30 years to grow back the forest. But we need 1mile wide clear cut forest fire breaks on a ten mile grid throughout the Sierra. And additional big fire breaks around towns. That will keep fires down to 100 sq miles instead of 500 or more now. And it will provide for a sustainable lumber industry.

Sure create massive firebreaks…but won’t shrubs and wildgrass still popup? And isn’t it dry enough now that it will provide enough fuel for the fire to just zoom right across the firebreak…

No. The trees have 150 tons of fuel per acre that throw embers out up to a mile. Unstoppable. Grass and brush fires are easy to put out and don’t throw embers. Plus the fire breaks will be planted with green trees that burn less easily than brush.

Nature cannot be defeated or tamed forever. If there is a fuel, fire will find its way. In thermodynamics, this idea is called entropy. Things naturally drift towards state of low energy. (that is what fire essentially is. It releases the energy stored in deadwood and other combustible material)

I used to love doing the Meek’s Bay to Phipp’s Peak loop; thought about doing it this year. Any word on how that area has done?

Everything is fine. Some damage in Meyers and near Paradise golf course. Most of the fire is south of pioneer. All structures saved in the Basin. Truly remarkable. The firefighters know how to save structures but can’t stop a fire storm. Best maps

Looks like the Tahoe market will continue to be hot.

The state of Tahoe real estate: As the Caldor Fire spread, homes in its path were still selling

https://www.sfchronicle.com/california-wildfires/article/The-state-of-Tahoe-real-estate-As-the-Caldor-16434606.php

Sierra Sotheby broker Demian Black advised his clients, buyers Michael and Rhea Wisherop, to postpone the transaction, even if they lost their deposit. The home could burn down, and he doubted whether loan or insurance companies would sign off. His own office was forced to evacuate.

But the Wisherops were undeterred, and on Friday, the property sold for $684,500, $35,500 above its initial asking price. The fire shifted course, sparing the new purchase.

Looks like it will open back up in 4 days, according to rumors.

Evacuation is over for SLT

Won’t be as low as 2014-16. Algae was removed by storm last weekend. Lake level is actually about average for last 100 years. The beaches are nice and large. The news media as usual is full of shit.we are looking forward to wide beaches covered in snow. Potential for the best snowshoeing and cross country skiing in years. I remember 2016 well. The drought naysayers said the lake won’t get full in 100 years. The lake level went up 8’ to full in one winter. It was 2’ lower than now.
