Normal practice. Just like the best fruits from China is exported. Everywhere practice that.

What Will H-1B Visa Restrictions Mean for Silicon Valley?
The Bay Area is watching Washington D.C. closely. Why? For the governmentās take on H-1B visas.

The way you need to look at this H1B visas is why Trumputin is requesting H2B visas. He doesnāt benefit from H1B visas.
What you see on this is his relentless hatred for anything and anybody contradicting him or not working with/for him. Amazon, Uber, you name the big shot, he hates them.
Out of politics, the answer is educate our kids so they here become the kings of their own kingdom without importing brains to work on the things America is well known for. For that I mean high tech, because I doubt I will ever see an Indian playing Football in the major leaguesā¦lol.
Soccer? Thatās another thing.
The industry lobbyistsā ace-in-the-hole argument is that if they canāt hire more H-1Bs, theyāll ship the work overseas.
So industry would work hard to redesign the jobs so that employees donāt have to be in USA.
Current situation is rockstar Americans are screwing American rank and file and Chinese/ Indian H1Bs. Not sure Trumpās EO would help. Rockstars should be able to redesign jobs to be done in China and India.
Not according to my mom, who spends more time in HK I think. Next time send us a picture so I can tell my mom to buy fruits at that store.
Often times fruits labelled from USA but they are actually not. Like every orange in HK is labelled āSunkistā but they donāt taste anywhere close to what we have here.
Heās saying more than that. Heās saying USA exports the best fruits to HK and also charges less. That doesnāt make much sense to me.
While I was in Australia studying for my degree, farmers told me they export the best overseas.
Even Stanford university has a program helping another university in Mexico where they are training and graduating students for the high tech industry.
Just donāt tell the cry baby Trumputin about it, he will destroy that friendship.
Sure. But do they also charge less than selling domestically? Would you sell your best stuff for less money?
Iām not au fait with the fruit industry⦠according to differentiation segmentation strategy, you do charge different prices for different markets. May be HKers eat only delicious Apple at reasonable price but Americans are willing to eat crappy ones because they canāt tell the difference.
Iāll go next month and see what fruits are there and take some pic . Donāt know what kind of fruit in march
(Sorry for hijacking this thread to talk about fruit pricesā¦)
My mom is always amazed at how cheap the oranges are here. Here is a commercial from one of the biggest supermarket chains in HK:
Speaking of Sunkist oranges, they do have Sunkist oranges on sale!
So if you buy a 72-pack it works out to USD $0.45 per orange.
Here is Walmart selling āCalifornia Orangesā. 4lb bag for $3.98 USD. How many oranges are in a 4lb bag?
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Lo-Bue-Oranges-California-Oranges-4-Lb/13424464
Also look at those freaking Japanese apples Wellcome is selling. $1.25 per freaking apple. That better be some magical apple! Seedless grapes from South Africa is $1.4 USD per pound. Celery is $1.15 USD each. I will do a price check at Trader Joeās tomorrow.
The bigger one in your ad 15 for 3 = $5 buck each $1.93US /$0.64 each
smaller one in your ad is 14 for 4 = 3.5 buck each $1.8US/ $0.45 each
Safeway is selling $1.99/$2.49 a pound occasionally they got sunkist.
Better than fighting over holy grail of chinese food!
Maybe we should have a thread about the holy grail of Indian food.
SF truly sucks when it comes to Indian food.
Talking about Indian food, Singapore has an outstanding Indian restaurant but is not located in Little India.

Ok, test time. Hangnail, what is the name of the restaurant? Yelp is there. Letās see what they say.
Not trying to stop the off-topic discussions but⦠
The current H1B situation with lower-wage consulting jobs bombarding the quota is unfortunate and should definitely be fixed, but I wonder if the current proposal (higher minimum wage to 100k + a degree from US university) is the right solution.
Is āanyā university degree eligible for the H1B visa? If thatās the case, what do you think those consulting firms would do next year? If I were them, Iād be opening up 10 universities in each major cities and all of them apply for accreditions if thatās required. Or is it just a way to get more $$$ flowing into US universities? Masterās degrees at most (even the top 10 ones) universities are already money making engines for funding.
Is 100k a fair bet? I know the US government loves STEM fields, but other liberal arts / social sciences / etc just canāt produce graduates with starting salary of 100k. Then US is deliberately repurposing H1B to be tech visas.
Wait, never mind, even PhDs in Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Neuroscience from MIT/Harvard/Princeton etc cannot command 100k starting salaries (they often go through years of PostDoc and Researcher positions thatās sub-100k before landing faculty positions).
Wait, never mind, many universities donāt even pay assistant professors 100k. Are we really that stupid to throw away basic science to get a few Javascript programmers to build some room / car sharing apps?
Would it be really hard for Dept of Labor to figure out the demand / supply for positions in each field, and set up a quota per field each year? Even without all the hype in machine learning + data science in SV, this is basic econometrics problem that can be easily solved. Then you can set up some fixed quota for all the fields, and variable quota left over for fields with more demand.
With the current proposal, weāll be losing all the <100k positions (probably mostly non-Bay area), and theyāll be replaced by mostly Bay area jobs. So Iād expect more people coming to BA/Seattle/NYC.

The Bay Area is watching Washington D.C. closely. Why? For the governmentās take on H-1B visas.
For Harvard/MIT/Berkeley/Stanford Ph.D.'s I think they can safely go the EB-1 route. Many years ago I heard itās a pretty easy route but you do need a Ph.D. for all practical purposes. I too donāt like the arbitrary 100K salary limit. You outlined some pretty good reasons.

Only the best and brightest⦠if they are, should be earning that type of pay. If not, they are just very good and not bright enough ![]()
